It's pretty cool when you get to hang out with racing legends.

Since riding for Team Classic Suzuki it's become the norm what with Mick Grant mentoring me at the TT & Manx Grand Prix, Phil Read MBE popping round to the race-van for a cuppa and Brian Reid joining us for team meals.

Last night was no exception when I got to be a guest along-side former Grand Prix & BSB racer Sean Emmett at the monthly meet-up of the Northants section of the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club.

Emmett shared some great controversial and entertaining stories before we all headed to Steve Wheatman’s pub, the Three Horse Shoes, to carry on chatting long in to the night.

Sean’s will be competing at CRMC race meetings on a Team Classic Suzuki RG500 this year and guess who gets to be his team-mate? Yep, I’ll be joining him for a few rounds on the team’s Suzuki XR69.

It was a cracking end to a great day. [I’m sure it went on long after I’d headed home].

Now I’m really looking forward to racing some short-circuit meetings on the classic bikes.

12 Hour Non-Stop Spinnathon in aid of Coming Home Forces charity.

Motorcycle legend and World Record holder Maria Costello has teamed up with fitness fanatic Emily Campbell to complete a gruelling 12 hour non-stop spinning challenge for Coming Home, the fundraising campaign for the Forces charity Haig Housing Trust.

The pair will start the challenge on at 0830hrs at Dallington Raquets and Fitness Club, Northampton and will be joined every hour by a new spinning instructor and class of spinners, including members of the Northampton Saints Rugby team. Coming Home is a campaign very close to their hearts as Emily’s husband Pete previously served in the Army and her sister Hayley is still serving. Maria’s partner Tim is also serving in the RAF. Emily and Pete are also embarking on three International Marathons later this year for Coming Home.

Coming Home aims to raise £20 million over the next five years to provide specially adapted homes for severely injured and disabled Service people. My blog from last weeks BBC East Midlands Sports Awards 2011:

What a fantastic night. I'm still buzzing from it. The BBC Look East team put on a brilliant awards ceremony as did the host venue, Bedford University.

The East Midlands is bursting with sporting talent and tonight I was fortunate to meet some of those gifted athletes.

Upon arrival at Bedford University I was greeted with a glass of champagne and a welcoming buffet. I found a spot to stand and settled in to some tasty morsels from the buffet when I was approached and asked; ‘Are you on your own, has someone blown you out?’

The man behind this rather forward question was none other than Olympic gold medallist Martin Cross. He was stood with another Olympic gold medallist rower and fellow MBE, Tim Foster. I’ll admit now that I didn’t know who Martin was but I did recognise Tim from the ‘Gold Fever’ TV show about the coxless four crew [Steve Redgrave, James Cracknell, Matthew Pinsent & Tim Foster] preparing for the Olympics in 2000. Martin’s accomplishments were only revealed to me when I was introduced to his business partner Ian Rowe. Between them they have built up a new way of encouraging and motivating children through the power of self-belief, something that all athletes’ have to have in abundance to become ‘super human’ - they've called it Gold Fever - check out the website www.gold-fever.net

We chatted for a while about the sort of people that we look up to, the ones we regard as ‘super human’ the ones who have done amazing things and realise that they all started out as what we would call ‘ordinary people’ – another miss-used term. Then with some persuasion I get Ian to talk about the ‘super human’ feat he will be attempting – to row across the Atlantic in record time [that’s under a month in time]. He’ll soon be more than qualified as a Gold Fever motivator and inspiration to the children he works with.

Then we we’re all ushered to our seats in one of Bedford Universities theatres.

It’s already been a great night but it’s about to get even better when the audience and I are witness to a celebration of some of the counties best athletes & sporting volunteers from past, present and ones to watch for the future. They include; Charly Hull [golf], Sam Robinson [volunteer & basket ball player], Jody Cundy MBE [cycling], Gail Emms [badminton], Simon Clegg [football], Chrissie Wellington [Ironman] and many more.

Then I realise I have been chatting with two of the stars of the night when Martin Cross is welcomed on to the stage to present Tim Foster MBE with his award.

It was a delight to attend such a well put together awards ceremony and I’ll be avidly following all the names I have now been introduced to, especially as some of them will be competing at the 2012 Olympics.

What winter blues? My day at Motorcycle Live 2011...

I just love the bike show. It’s like a bright light at the end of a dark tunnel of dreary winter weather and weekends devoid of racing. It’s changed and evolved over the years but it’s always been an essential part of my events calendar, a fix of that sexy motorcycle drug that’s thin on the ground at this time of year.

Yesterday was a whirlwind day of; book signings, meetings & lunch with work colleagues, discussing plans for 2012 with potential new sponsors, seeing my pizza race bike in all it’s splendour on the http://www.ngkntk.co.uk/ stand and some very unexpected yet positively exciting conversations about racing plans for 2012.

Throw in catching up with old and new friends, talking about membership with the Spyder Club, being introduced to biker and Olympic athlete high-jumper Ben Challenger and sharing a Ducati Panigale with BBC TV presenter Matt Roberts was cool but taking Julian Rhind-Tutt for an imaginary pillion ride was even better as I’m a huge fan of the TV series Green Wing that he starred in. Add to that some tasty canapés & uber gorgeous bikes at the Ducati UK after-show party and you’ve got one very long but awesome day at Motorcycle Live.

It was such a chaotic day that I didn’t get to see everything I wanted to see so I’m going back for a double helping on Thursday.

I’ll be doing a book signing on the Bagster stand [G455] in Hall 4 between 15.00-15.30 and I’ll be on the main stage for Question of Bikes straight after that.

Hopefully I'll have had my fix by the time that day at Motorcycle Live concludes? If not I can always go back as it's on until the 27th!

Exciting new granstands & 'fan-zones' are being introduced for the 2012 Isle of Man TT Races...

Five spectacular spectator areas have been designated as ‘Fan Zones’ for the 2012 Isle of Man TT Races, fuelled by Monster Energy, and each will have a temporary grandstand. The grandstands will have capacity of between 200 and 300 seats each, supplementing the main TT Grandstand on the start/finish line on Glencrutchery Road.

The five areas have been selected for their stunning views of the on track action and represent some of the fastest points on the course. As well as a temporary grandstand, each with around 200 seats, they will also feature catering and toilet facilities, free WiFi, free parking and enhanced PA systems relaying the Manx Radio TT live race commentary.

The five – Crosby Jump, Rhencullen, Ballacrye, Ginger Hall and CregNy Baa – are all iconic spots with clear views of the action. Crosby Jump sees riders routinely clocking 180mph as they tackle the crest in the road; Rhencullen, situated north of Kirk Michael, is one of the most spectacular sections of the course, while Ballacrye – a double apex taken in sixth gear -is widely recognised as one of the most demanding points on the course.

The final two ‘fan zones’, both next to famous pubs, are two of the most recognisable landmarks on the course – Ginger Hall at the edge of Sulby Village and The CregNy Baa at the end of the Mountain section of the course. The Grandstand at Ginger Hall offers a clear view of the riders tackling the late apex lefthander on the way into Ramsey while spectators at The Creg will see the riders as they approach from Kate’s Cottage and the sweeping run downhill into Brandish.

“Fans will always have their favourite spots but as the TT Races audience grows we want to make sure that spectators have a wide choice of options for watching the races. Demand for tickets for the Glencrutchery Road Grandstand increases every year and it is likely to have sold out by Christmas so we were keen to offer fans an alternative. We have conducted research that indicates fans are looking for these kind of facilities, and I am delighted we are able to bring them on line in time for TT 2012.”

Tickets for the fanzones, including guaranteed grandstand seat, are available for each of the four race days – Saturday 2nd, Monday 4th, Wednesday 6th and Friday 8th June – and are priced at £25 or £20 for midweek races. Coming to America - Take Two

Last year I went to America to race a 1965 Paul Dunstall Norton Lowboy 500 twin at the AHRMA Vintage Festival at Barber Motorsports. The gorgeous low-slung Norton Domi powered 500, owned by New York based bike collector and racer Jamie Waters, was a delight for all senses and a dream to ride but for a multitude of reasons, mainly a lack of development, it didn’t make it to the race.

A Norton Seeley 750 became my substitute steed, owned and raced by former musician and now bike builder Kenny Cummings and I claimed a 3rd on it, in my 2011 US racing debut in the AHRMA B.E.A.R.S class.

I must have done something right as I received another invitation from Jamie Waters to return to America. This time the offer had some once-in-a-lifetime embellishments that made me tingle just at the thought of them. Two bikes; the delicious Lowboy which had received engine work including a one piece crank, Carrillo rods, big-valve head & PW3 cam to enhance it’s Amal Mk2 carbs, Fontana front brake, Manx rear brake and Works Ultra-light shocks already in place.

A Norton Seeley Commando 750 twin, owned by Dan Rose, an almost exact replica of the one I raced last year, built by Kenny Cummings.

Is your mouth watering? This adventure would be a two-event trip that would encompass the beautiful Barber Motorsports in Alabama and a new track for me, the iconic Daytona International Speedway in Florida. I couldn’t say no, could I? Wait, their was more on offer, the opportunity to race against [or at least attempt] a true legend of motorcycle racing and one of my hero’s the 1993 500cc world champion Kevin Schwantz.

Here’s my diary of my American adventure, take two.

5th October:
One car ride and two flights later [that was one hell of a journey], I landed in Birmingham, Alabama. I met up with my motorbike building, PR slinging, international racing ambassador travel agent, Kenny Cummings, at the luggage carousel and headed for a long awaited sleep in a hotel not far from the circuit.

6th October:
Set-up day at the track – Barber Motorsports.

7th October:
A frenzy of bike practice ensued, kicking-off with a session on the sexy 750 Seeley. It was so good to be riding Barber again. It’s a bliss-full roller-coaster ride of a track, set in the most beautifully tendered grounds I’ve ever come across in racing. I didn’t however recall it being so bumpy. Luckily for me the actual builder of the fork internals used on this bike, Chris Cosentino, was on hand to change the springs & air-gap to make things a lot less choppy.

Then I got to ride the beautiful Lowboy. It handled like it was on rails but it wouldn’t pull high revs and on lap three it stopped. I pulled on to the grass & my helmet filled with the smell of burning oil. For the second-year running the Domi would not make the race. At this point I thought I’d been denied the chance to race with Schwantz.

Our bikes, Kevin’s & mine, were next to each other in the pit area. He shook my hand and I introduced myself, he replied with ‘I’m Kevin’ but I already knew that. We talked about shifting gear and when he revealed that he’d always raced with road shift I was so happy. Never again would I feel like a second rate racer for using road shift, because Kevin Schwantz does too. He thought it was funny that I give my bike a female gender rather than a male persona. However, that’s just one of the nuances I’ve picked up from the all male company I keep.

I was back out again on the Seeley. The suspension adjustments were not enough to cure the problems so Chris decided to go radical and dropped the forks through two inches.

With the Lowboy out-of-action, Kenny kindly offered me a Manx Norton he was due to race. It was a fraught introduction to such an iconic bike as I struggled with race shift [took makes things more trick the shift is on the right]. I came in after only a few laps more eager to return to the 750. I felt so at home on the Seeley plus I had try that suspension out. The days track time concluded on the 750 with a marked improvement on its handling. I was annoyed my Manx debut hadn’t been fruitful but a tiny window of practice remained the following morning.

Schwantz invited us to join him for dinner at Rusty’s, an authentic southern BBQ joint. Kevin Schwantz force-fed me banana pudding. An unforgettable experience had just been made all the sweeter. What an exquisite day. Does it get any better?

8th October:
Kenny had very kindly given his steed, a Manx Norton, to me so that I could race with Schwantz in the 500 premier class. Yesterday’s short practice on it was bolstered by one single lap before low down carburetion issues forced me to return to the pit. I went in to the qualifying session, of one timed lap, a little green to say the least, but that’s racing and although it was over in the blink of an eye I’d kept it together and put in an OK time. Now I do get to race my hero.

Lining up on the grid on the Summerfield Manx Norton with my hero, Kevin Schwantz was intense; I would have pinched myself if I were not concentrating so hard to keep the Manx running. I strained to see him. Yes, I really was sharing the same grid. I savoured the moment then shut my visor & prepared for the start procedure. My race ended abruptly when the bike started to suffer with what seemed like fuel starvation & I was forced to retire from the race. Nevertheless, I’d still been on track with ‘him’.

Next was the B.E.A.R.S. race on the 750. It almost didn’t happen but thankfully a spectator spotted my gear lever swinging in the breeze as I was riding to the holding area. Spanner man Kenny came to my rescue & with another huge slap, he sent me on my way to the grid. Last to arrive, I gathered my thoughts & prepared to do battle. This was the re-match after all. My start was average but it made it more fun working through the pack. The bike performed brilliantly & I crossed the line in first place. It was smiles all round in the Spannerland camp.

Attending a meal as joint guest speaker along with Schwantz was the perfect ending to the day, especially as we had more BBQ & banana pudding.

October 8th:
I’d come to America to race two bikes but I’d already ridden three. Today I tried my fourth. The Manx went back to Kenny; it was his turn to race it today. Instead I tried a 1961 McIntyre Matchless G50 complete with Minnovation 92 bore top-spec G50 engine, Hemmings magnesium drum selector 6-speed gearbox, Fontana brakes & Works Ultra-light shocks. Another from Jamie’s collection. The beautiful engine & gearbox were strong and like silk but the chassis was way off for my smaller frame and riding style. Therefore, I had to opt out of racing it, as we had no more opportunities to make adjustments.

The BEARS race however, on Dan’s Seeley, was another success with another podium, that’s two in two days, and 2nd place. Having such notables as Alan Cathcart and Paul & Maggie Smart here to congratulate me made it even sweeter. I was growing attached to the 750.

Schwantzy as we affectionately called him kindly posed for pictures holding a copy of my autobiography and when he asked me for a copy & to sign it to him I felt honoured. Then we had to leave for Florida next stop Daytona International Speedway.

I wasn’t leaving without a look around the Barber Motorsports museum; I wasn’t missing that this year. It’s so huge that I lost Kenny within minutes of being inside but instead found a legend, Nobby Clark & his 92-year-old friend Joe.

Joe insisted I join them on a private viewing of the bottom floor, which was a huge honour as it included a tour by former racer & Barber museum curator Chuck Huneycutt. He was in the process of restoring a very rare DKW race bike.

Seeing that, the Britten, a Sunbeam Model 80 T.T. and hundreds of other motorcycles, which you only dream of seeing in the flesh made for yet another unforgettable part of this American adventure.

Florida here we come. Road Trip.....

Provisional Dates for the 2012 Festival of Speed, Moving Motor Show and Goodwood Revival

The 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed is provisionally scheduled to take place over the weekend of 29 June-01 July, the same weekend that the world’s largest celebration of motoring culture has been held over the last three years. The 2012 Festival promises to be packed with action and excitement as the planet’s most glamorous racing machinery and famous drivers gather together in the beautiful surroundings of Goodwood Park. The 2012 theme is yet to be finalized.

The unique Goodwood Revival is provisionally scheduled for the weekend of 14-16 September next year. The Revival is truly a magical step back in time and celebrates the halcyon days of motor racing as it used to be with all of the accompanying spectacle and glamour of the era. Competitors and spectators alike dress in period fashions with the finest sights and entertainment of the pre-1966 era for all to enjoy.

All of the 2012 Goodwood motor sport events promise a spectacular array of cars and motorcycles, plus star drivers, riders and plenty of other fabulous attractions to thrill the crowds.

As in previous years, admission to both Goodwood motor sport events will be strictly by advance ticket only, with 2012 ticket sales commencing from Monday 31 October 2011. As in 2011, young adults aged between 13 and 18 can purchase Festival of Speed and/or Revival tickets for half the full adult price. Previously all visitors aged 13 or over would have been charged at full price. Children of 12 years or under remain free of charge, as does all car parking.

2012 NW200 date confirmed...

International North West 200 organisers, Coleraine & District Motor Club Ltd have confirmed that next year’s Race Day will take place on Saturday 19th May 2012 following ratification by governing body, the Motor Cycling Union of Ireland (MCUI) during November.

Technical director Mervyn Whyte MBE recently completed a series of discussions with BSB and DORNA organisers and World Endurance teams to ensure the NW200 didn’t clash with key international racing schedules following last year’s unavoidable absence of HM Plant Honda stars John McGuinness and Keith Amor who were set to compete in World Endurance in Albacete, Spain.

Following Coleraine & District Motor Club’s presentation and proposal to Coleraine Borough Council, consultation will get underway next week in terms of proposed daytime practice on Tuesday 15th May and additional evening racing on Thursday May 17. Detailed letters will be delivered to all residents located in and around the course and local people will be invited to respond to NW200 organisers by Tuesday 15th November.

Outlining proposed plans Mervyn Whyte said, “We aim to close the 8.9 mile circuit roads on Tuesday and Thursday from 9.30am until 2.30pm providing substantial time for practice including valuable newcomer sessions.
To expand our race programme and broaden the appeal to fans, we hope to introduce two exciting races on the Thursday evening – a Superstock event followed by a Supertwins Race – with roads set to close 5.30pm to 9pm. We believe the new revitalised programme will attract additional spectators and add a little more live action to our Race Week schedule. The addition of the Supertwins race is a first for the North West 200 and we will be following the same regulations as the Isle of Man TT who are also set to introduce a Supertwins class for the first time in 2012.”

Whyte also confirmed that Saturday’s 2012 Race Day programme will follow last year’s schedule and feature five races - two superbike and two Supersport races as well as the Superstock class. A new aggregate points system will also apply to both the Thursday and Saturday Superstock races.

TT takeover at Motorcycle Live

TT fans have a new date to add to the diary as Motorcycle Live 2011 will once again be dedicating a full day to the legendary Isle of Man event. The final day of the show – which takes place at The NEC, Birmingham from 19-27 November – is officially TT Day.

On Sunday 27 November, the likes of John McGuinness, Conor Cummins, Bruce Anstey, Ryan Farquhar, Michael Dunlop, Michael Rutter and sidecar stars Dave Molyneux, John Holden and Andy Winkle will all make an appearance for a celebration of one of the world’s most thrilling road racing events.

The Black Horse Stage, in the Arai Entertainment Zone, will feature a TT takeover, with a themed Q&A hosted by James Whitham and a special Fast Bikes Question of Bikes quiz hosted by Steve Parrish and contested by the TT stars. AMERICAN SUCCESS FOR COSTELLO ON BOARD A BRITISH BIKE

Bering motorcycle clothing ambassador Maria Costello returned from a fortnight's racing in America this week with three wins and a second place finish to her name.

The Northamptonshire racer had been competing in the Historic Cup Road Racing Series organised by the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association, in back-to-back events over two weekends: the first at Barber Motorsports in Alabama from October 8 to 9, and the second last weekend at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida.

Invited for the second year running by American bike collector & racer Jamie Waters, Maria had a slightly disappointing start to her American campaign at Barber when the Paul Dunstall Norton Lowboy on which she was due to compete on against one of her heroes, 1993 500cc world champion Kevin Schwantz, broke down. Maria’s consolation came on board a Seeley Norton 750 Commando, owned by Dan Rose, when she took a win and second place in the British, European and American Racing Series class.

And last weekend, racing at the iconic banked Daytona Speedway track for the first time, she claimed two more wins in the BEARS class onboard the Dan Rose Seeley Norton 750, claiming the Historic Cup Road Racing Series World Championship in the process.

Costello added: “Getting this opportunity to race in America for the second time was fantastic. I’d obviously done something right last year. Getting to spend time with my hero Kevin Schwantz was like icing on an already amazing cake. Sure I was disappointed I didn’t get to race him but getting to hang out at the track with him, he even asked for a copy of my book, and the advice he gave was far more rewarding especially as it led to two podiums.”

Costello also spoke of Daytona: “This track has banking as steep as 31 degrees, as steep as a ski slope, so steep you can't walk up it. It was unreal to ride, like nothing I've ever done before and I’d like to thank racer Pat Mooney for helping get over my nerves and ride the banking. I loved it.”

“I can’t thank Jamie Waters enough for this unforgettable opportunity. He is doing great things for vintage racing in the U.S. He was influential in getting Kevin Schwantz and a huge team of Kiwi riders over to compete in this championship and it now looks like this could become an annual event. Thanks also to New York based bike builder Kenny Cummings for his support and to AHRMA for the great racing and hospitality.”

Bering leathers ambassador, Maria Costello MBE, made history by becoming the first woman to achieve two podium finishes on the mountain course by taking third place, with a dramatic push to the finish, in Monday’s Motorsport Merchandise 250cc race.

Racing a Bob Jackson Suzuki T20 two-stroke for the first time around the TT course, Maria set off from number 64 on the road and despite encountering traffic as early as on as Quarterbridge she was lying in fourth place, only 3 seconds back on third place.

Bob Jackson's strategy to pit for fuel on lap three saw Maria move in to first place with a lead of almost 9 seconds from Barry Davidson with Peter Wakefield a further 4 seconds back in third.

Costello added: ‘Getting a board at Sulby Bridge with P1 on it put a massive smile on my face. I knew it would change once the others came out of their pit-stops. But it was a great strategy by Bob Jackson, especially with such wet and misty conditions the race could easily have been stopped early. ‘

With Costello coming into the pits to refuel at the end of lap 3, Barry Davidson moved back into the lead with a 21 second ahead of Peter Wakefield in second. The Bob Jackson team did a great pit-stop and Maria was pushed off by Graeme Crosby - Daytona 200, Imola 200, Suzuka 8 Hours, and Isle of Man TT winner, and rejoined the race in third place.

The chequered flag was out and Barry Davidson took the honours with a race time of 1:42.30.89 from Peter Wakefield (1:43.08.50) in second but there was drama unfolding for the final podium position.

Costello, who was the first woman solo competitor to achieve a podium on the mountain course in 2006, having closed the gap to 7 seconds in third place by the Bungalow, was reported to be stopping at Governors Dip.

The battery on the T20 had failed and the bike had stopped. Maria, without knowing that she had almost six minutes on the next rider in fourth place, paddled the bike out of the dip and then, with the chequered flag in view, pushed the bike to the finish line to take third place in a time of 1:47.31.88.

‘I thought third place was lost but I was determined to get a finish for Bob Jackson & the team and I was sure that you could push in, so I set off towards the finish line. Bob, Allan & Brenda have worked so hard to get the bike ready for the Manx so I wanted to repay them. I consider myself physically fit but I was looking down at my legs and willing them to keep going, I was running on empty. Huge thanks to Bob Jackson for putting together a fantastic little machine, other than the battery failure she pulled like a train, had a silky smooth gear-box and never put a foot wrong. Allan for giving me more than enough fuel to finish, Brenda for all the support, Paul for help in the pit-stop, Granty for suspension set-up & Crosby for the push out the pits – we made history.’

An exhausted yet delighted Costello could hardly believe that after pushing the T20 a distance of almost 500 metres, she had still finished in third place and would be on the podium at a Manx Grand Prix for the second time in her racing career.

Maria will be competing again on Friday aboard the Steve Wheatman Team Classic Suzuki XR69 in the Manx Grand Prix Classic Superbike race.

Wednesday 24th August

The rain cleared and practice got away in good conditions. I was out first on the big Suzuki XR69 with the modern bikes. Spanner [Paul Boulton] had managed to get my bike to the front of the second lane so I was able to do two laps with ease.

I jumped from the XR to the little T20, Betty, which was being warmed up by Bob Jackson. She didn’t want to play-ball down pit-lane but I wasn’t giving up and as we reached the top of Bray Hill she finally chimed in. The grin grew across my face and I enjoyed following another classic racer, learning a few different lines that suit these little two-strokers. So I was a little gutted when she broke down coming out of the Veranda. Thanks to Ken for letting me shelter in his little hut. Hat’s off to these marshals, standing in a desolate place such as here, I can’t imagine how nasty it would be when the fog comes down. So thanks to Ken & all the people who marshal here on the Isle of Man TT course!

The up-dates on the big bike have really made for a smoother ride and having Pirelli Supercorsa tyres on is a real advantage as these are the tyres I run on all my other modern race bikes – familiar rubber is good ☺

I really enjoyed my two laps on the big bike and despite the clutch slipping she feels good. So I’m looking forward to more laps in dry conditions during the remainder of practice week.

I came across an incident out of Greba Bridge on the first lap. It wasn’t until later that night that I was told it was Neil Kent but to find out the following morning that he’d lost his life was hard to absorb. He was a very well known MGP winner & competitor, a true gent and he’ll be sorely missed. Rest in peace.

Thursday 25th August
Paul had changed the plates and springs in the clutch so we headed off to Jurby to test the big Suzuki. Stopping off for a bit of lunch on the way back at the Sulby Glen Hotel.

Rain decided to soak the course just before practice was due to get away. I opted to concentrate on riding just the T20 and in drying conditions we managed our first complete lap. I really thought I was on for getting her round a second time but she broke down again, this time just before White Gates in Ramsey. Huge thanks to the very friendly and kind marshal Craig who took me to Paul Phillips house to keep warm until my crew arrived to pick me up. Thanks also to Joseph for the coat and cuppa. You can’t beat the hospitality over here.

Bob & his team were as happy as me with our first lap and we finally know what the problem is [fingers crossed] so we’ll be aiming to get her qualified tonight. Apparently I was 19 seconds faster from the start to Ballaugh on my second lap, so despite not finishing it I was obviously making better progress as I got more used to riding her.

Tuesday 23rd August.

Granty & Paul spent the morning working on the Steve Wheatman Suzuki XR69 to resolve the problems that had caused my retirement the night before and it’s all ready for this evenings practice.

The only alteration Bob Jackson made to the T20 was the fitment of a shorter clutch cable to make the clutch lever lighter. So Betty wass ready to go too. [Huge thanks to Bob Jackson for this opportunity].

The clerk of the course, Phil Taubman announced that the Classic Superbikes can practice in the modern bike classes. Which makes complete sense with the speeds they can achieve. This should help me with getting both bikes qualified as I can use the Classic practice solely for riding Betty and focus on riding the XR in a completely separate class. Thank you MMCC!

So I was out first on the tiny Suzuki T20 owned by Bob Jackson. Mick Grant had adjusted the suspension [although a few more modifications will be needed as I’m a fair bit lighter than it’s previous rider].

Practice was delayed by 20 minutes and then four newcomers were given an escorted lap and had to reach Ramsey before we were allowed to set off.

I was quite nervous about taking Betty down Bray Hill for the first time but I need not have been. As soon as I got her up in the power band she pulled like a little train and I had a big smile on my face. I was still adjusting to having to slip the clutch [it’s been a long time since I raced a two-stroke] but I was loving the opportunity of riding something so very different [again] around the TT course. My enjoyment was brought to a premature halt though when she started miss firing and I had to retire just before Ballig Bridge.

Now the challenge of getting back to the paddock, before the 2nd practice session began….

Thanks to three very helpful, Norton riding, Germans who took me back to the paddock [I didn’t have time to get their names, I’m hoping they make it to the Grandstand tonight so I can thank them properly].

I thought I was late. But as I ran past the Grandstand I could hear bikes still being warmed up in the holding area. A nasty incident at School House corner had caused a red-flag and not one rider had managed a complete lap [in the classic classes] and those out on the circuit were now being escorted back. [Get well soon Brian Purdy].

I changed my visor to a clear one, as the light was failing and even some of the street-lights on Glencrutchery Road had come on. Then the clerk of the course announced that practice would have to be abandoned, for the modern bikes, due to the failing light.

I guess if you add my half a lap [on the XR] on to the quarter of a lap I completed on the T20 I’ve done three quarters of a lap so far. I did more miles on the back of the Norton [getting lost on the way back from Ballig Bridge].

Fingers crossed we get away tonight. It’s been raining but the sun has appeared, for the moment anyway!

Monday 22nd August:

In pretty-much perfect conditions the Manx Grand Prix Festival finally got underway following Saturday’s session being cancelled due to bad weather. A short delay unfortunately resulted in the 3rd session for the classics being cut short, so this meant that trying to do 1 lap on each bike would be pretty tricky so we opted to run the Steve Wheatman Suzuki XR69 for 2 laps.

Setting off down Bray Hill was the greatest feeling in the world. The XR69 has had some up-dates since last year; the engine has been given a new top end, the forks have been up-rated with Maxton internals, Dymag 17 rims & new discs complete with Pirelli Supercorsa tyres. [And according to my Spanner – Paul Boulton the reduced wheel size means the brake ratio is improved giving me more brake power].

The bike felt great and I was really enjoying myself when a few niggles reared their rather ugly little heads and I had to stop at Parliament Square in Ramsey. Therefore completing only half a lap.

Spanner & Granty collected me in the van along with a 125 and it's rider who had also retired at the same spot. [You owe me a Crunchie Joel].

Practice gets underway at 18.20 on Tuesday with the Classic, Classic Superbike, Junior Post Classic Lightweight and Newcomers B followed by the Senior, Junior, SuperTwin and Newcomers A scheduled to go out at 19.05.

Maria Costello MBE, the BERING motorcycle leathers ambassador, is returning to the Isle of Man, after a successful TT, to compete on two very different classic machines at this year’s Manx Grand Prix.

The former TT female lap record holder will be competing on a two-stroke around the TT course for the first time in her career when she contends a Bob Jackson Suzuki T20 in the 350/250 Classic Grand Prix on Monday 29th August.

Her second steed is the familiar Steve Wheatman owned Suzuki XR69. Maria was denied a podium finish, on this bike, last year when the steering damper bolt broke. Maria is therefore keen to be reacquainted with a bike she feels she has unfinished business with and hopes to improve on her 2010 5th place, in the newly titled Classic Superbike race on Friday 2nd September.

Costello’s enduring passion for the 37.73 miles of real roads that make up the TT course will be further boosted by working with seven times TT winner Mick Grant, TT podium finisher Bob Jackson, mechanic Paul Boulton & sponsor Steve Wheatman who are all supporting her efforts at this year’s event.

Maria added, ‘The opposition will be tough, the XR69 a challenge to ride and the T20 will be a whole new experience but I’ll relish every lap, especially with the dream team I have supporting me. I can’t wait!’

Maria will continue her support of CoppaFeel!, her chosen charity of 2011, by displaying CoppaFeel! logos on the XR69 & T20 race bikes and by collecting donations in CoppaFeel! collection tins.

Top Ten for the Pizza Bike in Skerries Debut

Maria Costello MBE and the CMS supported pizza race bike took yet another top-ten finish in the Irish Supertwin championship, this time during it's debut at the famous Skerries road races.

The bike that Maria built, affectionately nick-named the pizza race bike, has proved to be a more than capable road race machine in the hands of the BERING leathers ambassador.

Starting from 15th place on the grid Maria avoided the incident at the first corner and rode a solid race, improving her lap times by almost three seconds, to finish 9th in her debut at the Skerries road race.

Maria comments:

“The mass start combined with one of the most slippery and tightest first corners was always going to be interesting and one rider went down. The road ends draw you in too and my Sigma slipper clutch definitely got me out of trouble on more than one occasion. I’d managed to stay out of trouble at the start, got my head down and aimed for the rider in front, which seemed to work. Mark Morgan showed me his wheel in to Finnegan’s corner on the last lap but I managed to defend my position until the chequered flag. To say I’m happy with another top-ten finish is an understatement.”

Even the daunting, tight and twisty back roads couldn’t deter newcomer Costello from making sure she came home smiling from an event she holds in high regard.

“This is one of the best road races I’ve competed at but it’s not just the racing it’s the people and the warm welcome you get here at Skerries. Having a local family of Costello’s makes me feel at home and having three Costello’s compete and finish in the same race must have been a first.”

Costello’s home-built Supertwin is based on a Kawasaki ER650 and is still being developed. It was only whilst ironing out a rough-spot low-down in the power on a dyno at the Bush road races, that a problem was revealed and once resolved gave the ER another 5 horse power and 5 more lb of torque.

Costello adds:

“I’ve got sponsor Tony Morris, engine tuner Tony Holmes and BF Tim McGivern to thank for all the assistance in building this Supertwin but we’re no where near finished. Its one big learning curve that doesn’t stop with the build, the suspension set-up is something that, with a little outside advice, we’re learning to do ourselves.”

Maria is hoping that her next outing on board the Supertwin will be at the Dundrod 100 & Ulster Grand Prix.

BERING ambassador Maria Costello MBE enjoyed a rewarding 2011 Isle of Man TT on board her CMS supported Yamaha R6 when she collected two TT Bronze replica’s for finishing in 37th & 29th consecutively, in the two TT Monster Energy Supersport races.

The two-week-long event is one of Maria’s biggest on her calendar and also one of her favourites due to past success which includes holding the female TT lap record for five years and in 2005 she became the first woman on the podium in a race around the course at the Manx Grand Prix. This year it left her with a new personal best lap time and smiling but it didn’t run without incident.

Sunshine cleared the over-night rain and the Isle of Man TT Monster Energy Supersport race 1 started in dry conditions at 10.45am on Monday 6th June. Maria was just in to her second lap when the race was red flagged and stopped. The race re-started at 1pm over a shorter distance of just three laps. The dilemma of whether to pit for fuel on lap one or lap two would prove crucial for all competitors.

Costello comments: “Mick Grant helped with my decision. My standing start lap is fast so we decided that I’d do a flying lap before coming in for a short fuel-stop on lap two. However, I didn’t settle in to the race as well as expected & my 2nd lap was my fastest. I was still happy with my first 2011 TT finish, the CMS R6 had worked really well and Mick’s pep talk during the fuel stop settled me and I almost matched my PB around the TT course. I didn’t know until after the race that fellow competitor, Derek Brien, was killed in the earlier accident at the fast Gorse Lea section of the TT course. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.”

The dramatic shortened race was won by Padgett’s Bruce Anstey followed by Keith Amor & Guy Martin. Maria concluded her first TT race of 2011 in 37th place. She collected her TT bronze replica from her hero Mick Doohan who was making a guest appearance presenting the prizes at the Villa Marina awards night.

The second TT Monster Energy Supersport race also had to be re-scheduled when weather deteriorated forcing the organisers to red flag it and postpone it until the following day.Under perfect conditions the final Monster energy Supersport TT race got under way. Maria again started from number 55 and past Sam Dunlop [54] early on in her first lap. It was a lonely race until French rider Herve Ganter passed her at Parliament Square and Maria & Herve came across the mountain together entering the pits for fuel at the same time.

Maria’s pit crew of Mick Grant, Tony Morris, Tom Llewelyn & Bryan Bays worked great during the fuel-stop and Maria was away faster than her French competitor and she was at Ballacraine before he caught her. Costello went on to put in a new personal best of 114.97mph on her final lap and finished in a commendable 29th place collecting another TT Bronze Replica in the process. The race was won by Gary Johnson who took his first ever TT victory.

Costello added: “I really enjoyed the TT this year. Last year was my first TT for five years and I put too much pressure on myself and didn’t enjoy it. This time I improved my overall speed around the TT course and did it with a huge smile on my face, doing big jumps and wheelies everywhere, it was great. Now I can build on that.

Maria also continued to show her support for CoppaFeel!, her chosen charity of 2011, by displaying CoppaFeel! logos on the front of her CMS Yamaha R6. After what seemed like a long winter that dragged on and on it only feels like two minutes ago that I was last here on the IoM.

It's good to be back.

The ferry crossing was calm despite the recent weather warnings and thankfully our sailing was not disrupted.

Tony, Ian, Tom & I managed to get the awning up before the heavy rain arrived.

It wasn't however until almost 10pm that we left the paddock, a little soggy but still happy to be on the rock, and headed to our digs.

I'm staying with a landlady I've stayed with before (that year I got the female lap record) who I now call a friend. Hilary is just the best. She'd even saved me a portion of spag bol and made me a cuppa when I arrived.

I'm now writing this from my ultra comfy bed and my eyes are trying to close. So I'll give you more of an up-date on TT 2011 tomorrow - nite!

Ducati UK really do know how to put on a great biking event and this weekend’s Ducati Days – The Art of Corse was no exception. The venue for this two day occasion was their new home the newly refurbished Silverstone circuit, now complete with its impressive and recently opened ‘Wing’ extension.

With the weather on our side I and 180 other bikes took to the track and not just one track, we had three different lay-outs to savour. On Saturday we had two short circuits to choose from then come Sunday they were joined together to allow us to experience the full MotoGP circuit.

The sound of all those Ducati’s echoing around the track was music to my ears. It was only earlier this year that I got to fulfil an ambition and actually race a Ducati, an 848 Evo in their Challenge races at BSB, but my love and passion for this beautiful breed of motorcycle has been with me since I started biking [yes, that’s a long time ago].

This iconic brand of motorcycle not only gives me a huge return in the way of performance when you ride one but just looking at one makes me all gooey. So when my hero Steve Hislop won the British Superbike Championship aboard a Ducati in the 2002 I did go weak at the knees.

It was Paul Smart who summed up the brand with one simple word – spirit. Now he knows a thing or two about Ducati’s. He was instrumental in putting the Ducati name on the map back in 1972 when he won the Imola 200.

Paul, a true legend, was one of the many guests at Ducati Days and he was joined by his son and BSB racer Scott Smart, another grand prix legend Jeremy McWilliams, former racer and now commentator James Hayden, oh and me both on track and on stage for some Q&A sessions which were hosted by the lovely BBC MotoGP presenter Matt Roberts. Matt was also on track and got his knee down for the first time - not bad for a track day virgin huh?

The first Ducati I got to ride was insane looking Diavel.I've been gaging to throw a leg over one since the NEC show last year. It didn’t disappoint. After just one session I was in love. It’s huge presence is matched by its power – it has stacks of it, wow it sure did try and pull my arms out of their sockets and my neck had a great [pre-TT] neck work out] but it’s the silky smooth delivery that makes this bike such a pleasure to ride. A pussy cat one minute then a straight-line Superbike beater the next, it has spirit alright. OK so the lack of ground clearance was a slight hindrance on track but everyone who rode it came back to the pits grinning, especially after checking out the scraps on the foot-pegs. I've already put one on my birthday present wish list.

Getting some track riding tips off Spidey & Badger, no they’re not cartoon characters they’re California Superbike School instructors, was a real bonus [I’d love to do the whole course]. The CSS School is also based at Silverstone so the entire fleet of CSS instructors were on hand to offer free instruction & advice.

If you hadn’t booked track time you still had the chance to experience the Silverstone circuit when everyone was invited to ride in a massive parade. I didn’t realise how impressive we all looked until I saw the photographs, particularly the ones taken with the imposing Silverstone Wing in the back ground.

The uniqueness of the event was not only down to the track action, the paddock was alive with high-end trade stands too. All eager to offer advice and show off their products and services. These included top of the range Mercedes cars & vans, suspension experts Ohlins, Bianchi cycles, the Silverstone based motorcycle hire and European tour organisers Spyder Club and many more.

Another unique element to the weekend were the series of seminars which kicked off with an enlightening talk by the Ducati UK MD Tim Maccabee and others included Moto2 guru and Sigma slipper clutch genius Neil Spalding.

It didn’t end there either, Ducati UK seemed to have hired the entire Silverstone complex as we also had access to a Ducati Museum which had over 30 bikes on show. Kindly organised by Mick White from the Ducati Owners Club and Alistair Wager also had his Ducati Supermono on show - www.britaliamoto.com and both Tim Maccabee and Paul Smart got to ride it on track – I was so envous until I realised I had a fleet of Ducati’s to ride and got back onboard the Diavel for some more smile inducing laps.

To say I had a great weekend is an understatement. Surrounded by Ducati motorbikes, making new friends meeting old friends, bundles of track time, seminars, trade stands, Q&A sessions, rubbing shoulders with racing legends [both on and off the track] it couldn’t have been sweeter – I loved it.

Thank you to Ducati UK and all the staff and people who made the event such a corker. It was definitely the perfect weekend before I head off to compete at the Isle of Man TT.

My TT Prep...

So what does my TT preparation include?

As well as organising all the travel and accommodation logistics, ordering spares, making sure the van is packed with everything we could ever need during the TT fortnight, designing posters, organising team-wear, writing press releases, contacting sponsors plus all the bike related things - preparing bikes [with huge help from Tim McGivern, Tony of CMS & all my sposnors], I also need to be physically and mentally prepared for one of the greatest challenges I will face this season.

The TT is a true challenge of man and machine and preparation is vital in ensuring that the two week-long event runs as smooth as possible.

To get my head up-to-speed and in the right place for competing around a highly dangerous 37.73 mile long real-road course I use a hypnotherapist called Christian Baker www.christianbaker.net to help me improve my mental toughness. After all sport is as much a mental game as it is physical.

It may not be for everyone but the hypnotherapy techniques Christian uses work for me. I can’t recommend Christian more highly and would encourage all sports men and women to consider it as part of their ‘game plan’ for whatever sport they want to achieve in.

Being physically fit is essential when it comes to competing at the TT races. If you’ve seen the on-bike footage you’ll have an idea of how challenging the course is and how much the rider moves about on the bike. Or go and watch the TT3D movie currently in all good cinemas, it will give you a real insight in to what the TT is all about.

What watching a lap on TV doesn’t allow you to experience are the physical demands a rider will endure to complete a lap of TT. With flat-out speeds of up to 200mph and relentless cornering and hard braking the rider is put through serious g-forces and this has to be maintained for almost 20 minutes [less if your name is McGuinness] per lap and each race consists of either 4 or 6 laps. That’s approx 160 to 240 miles per race and the races are preceded by a week of practice so you can add at least another 600 miles to your total mileage.

I love being fit & healthy so I’m already happy doing gym work, Pilates and cycling. But when it comes to being fit for racing I do have to ramp it up and I particularly benefit from being pushed when it comes to strength & conditioning training so I’ve got Tori from Body Fit UK helping me with my TT prep this year.

Stars of track and screen will join 'Ducatisti' at Silverstone next weekend (May 21/22) for the ultimate Ducati track experience.

Carl Fogarty, four times World Champion and Ducati Legend spearheads a cast of special guests that includes former GP Star Jeremy McWilliams, current TV commentator and ex racer James Haydon, Road Racer and media star Maria Costello MBE, Matt Roberts BBC MotoGP presenter and former athlete and British record holder Iwan Thomas MBE.

Moto Rapido racing will be attending the event with their team including BSB Evo rider Scott Smart and 848 Challenge rider Jamie Poole. Other 848 Challenge riders taking to the track at Silverstone includes current champion Darren Fry.

Road racer, Maria Costello MBE, will be supporting the CoppaFeel! breast cancer charity this season.

The CoppaFeel! logo will be seen on every bike she races in 2011. The vast array of race machinery will range from her CMS Yamaha R6 used at International road races, her self-built Kawasaki Supertwin in the Irish Supertwin championship, a Ducati 848 Evo in the 848 Challenge, a Suzuki XR69 in the Post Classic Manx Grand Prix and a Dunstall Norton Lowboy in America.

By carrying the logo Maria aims to help raise awareness for the charity and of course about breast cancer.

PODIUM FOR PIZZA RACE BIKE AT COOKSTOWN 100

Maria Costello M.B.E. achieved an impressive podium finish on her Kawasaki ER650 Supertwin ‘the pizza race bike’ in it’s debut race at the Cookstown 100 which marks the start of the 2011 Ulster road racing season.

The Supertwin podium success tasted even sweeter due to the fact that Maria, the PR Agent for the Bering motorcycle clothing brand, had built the bike herself over winter, finishing it with only a day in-hand prior to this event.

With only a short three lap practice session of the Orritor circuit at Cookstown Maria’s lap times put her fifth on the grid for the Supertwin B Race.

A cracking start put Maria with the four front runners from the off. With each lap she got more accustomed to her new race bike and picked off riders one-by-one until she only had the leader, Tom Llewelyn, ahead of her. Maria chased hard and in doing so improved her lap times by almost six seconds. A red-flag incident brought the race to a premature end and saw Tom LLewelyn take the win from Maria, a delighted runner-up.

Maria commented on her success, ‘I’m over the moon with the pizza bike. Everything came together just in time. I only got to test-ride the bike the day before we boarded the ferry to Ireland. With so little testing time there was always going to be unknown territory. So I’m even more delighted with it’s performance. It’s fast, light as a feather and handles brilliantly – it’s mega and I built it.”

The Supertwin race-bike has been nick-named the pizza race bike due to it’s former vocation as a pizza delivery bike.

Costello added, “The nick-name just stuck and it’s got a huge following on-line via the blog I wrote which documents the build from day one. I wanted to improve my mechanical knowledge and thought that the blog could be a way of passing on tips to others. Plus it’s a great way of giving all the people who supported the project a place to showcase their products.”

Maria Costello M.B.E. realised yet another racing ambition when she competed on a Ducati in the first round of the Rapid Solicitors Ducati 848 Challenge at Brands Hatch over the Easter break.

It’s over ten years ago since Maria last competed in a short-circuit support race at a British Superbike Championship event. But her lack of recent short-circuit experience was no match for her absolute desire to compete on a Ducati, a brand with vast racing heritage. And despite the huge challenge, Maria accepted the invitation to race the VIP Ducati 848 Evo Superbikebike without hesitation.

The Challenge opening round saw last season’s runner-up Leon Morris take the double win pushed hard all the way by double second placed man and former British Supersport champion Mike Edwards. The competition was hot and the pace was fast and although Maria found more speed with each session on track she finished in 19th and 18th places respectively.

While slightly disappointed with her results nothing could detract from the sheer satisfaction and enjoyment Maria obtained from racing a Ducati in the 848 Challenge.

Maria commented on her Ducati debut, "To race the Ducati 848 in such a highly competitive series, without having ridden or tested it before, was always going to be a tall order. Thankfully my fears didn't stop me from accepting the challenge. It’s been a dream come true and I’d love to compete in the rest of the series. Huge thanks to Ducati UK, Team AOR/Boast Plumbing, my boyfriend and all the 848 Challenge riders for making me so welcome and making it such a fantastic weekend of racing."

Maria Costello MBE, one of the most recognisable faces in British Motorcyling, will ride in this week’s first round of the Rapid Solicitors Ducati 848 Challenge at Brands Hatch.

Maria has never before raced a Ducati during her career but now the 848 Challenge has presented her with an opportunity to realise an ambition of racing a Ducati Superbike. She will be the first female to compete in the 848 Challenge when she rides the Ducati UK VIP bike over two races during the Easter weekend.

Maria commented on her Ducati debut, "I am so excited about this opportunity, I have always loved Ducati’s and I have ridden many of the Superbikes on track days, but never before in a race. I tested the 848 at Brands last week and it is fantastic bike and I am really looking forward to racing it in front of a big crowd."

The first round of the 848 Challenge will take place over the Easter Weekend, 22 to 24 April, and is an official support race for the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship.

So my all-time hero Mick Doohan will be attending and now Nicky Hayden, the 2006 MotoGP World Champion, is also visiting the TT on Wednesday 8th June.

He'll be riding in the Arai Parade lap & will also start and present the trophy for the Monster Energy Supersport Race 2. I'm in that race!

Then he heads off to prepare for the British MotoGP round at Silverstone on Sunday 12th June.

New-engine gets first dyno run at BSD...

The season's about to kick off so it was dyno time for the CMS Yamaha R6 today and I popped along to see Mark Brewin at BSD in Peterborough.

The new Tony Holmes tuned engine was run in and a new map installed.

Now the R6 is ready for some testing next week.

My R6 swing-arm was looking a little worse for wear but a new one would bust the budget.....

....so we turned to the guys at Alpha Powder Coatings Ltd in Peterborough. Who gave it the full treatment and boom - we got the swing arm back and it looks as good as new. Textured powder coating rocks and costs a fraction of the price of buying a new swing arm.

Costello to compete in 2011 South African Classic TT Series

The Northampton racer is heading off to sunnier climes to compete on a Trident Engineering Suzuki XR69 in the annual South African Classic TT Series which runs over three consecutive weekends at three different circuits.

The series kicks off on January 22nd at the Historic East London Grand Prix circuit followed by a two day event at the Zwartkops Raceway concluding with another two day event at the Killarney Racetrack in Cape Town. The Zwartkops event coincides with the 50th anniversary of the circuit and more spectators are expected to attend this three day event than attended the recent World Superbike Event at Kyalami.

The former Isle of Man TT female lap record holder will be riding the same Suzuki XR69 she used to compete on in the Manx Grand Prix Senior Post Classic race in 2010. She narrowly missed a podium finish on this bike when the steering damper bolt snapped off forcing her to reduce her speed. Maria is therefore keen to be reacquainted with a bike she feels she has unfinished business with.

“I’ve been invited by my Manx Grand Prix mentor and TT legend Mick Grant. Mick has been taking racers and enthusiasts to South Africa to escape the English winter since before I was born. The racing bikes taking part in the series date from 1988 back to the early days of motorcycling. Maria’s bike is a replica of the XR69 Granty won the Isle of Man Senior TT on. Others include a Yamaha TR 750 two stroke grand prix bike, a Ducati 888 Desmo that won a British Superbike Championship in the hands of Carl Fogarty and an ex factory Suzuki RG 500 Grand Prix bike that has been ridden by both the late Barry Sheene and Mick Grant.

Spring Fields Motorbike Show - 15/16 January 2011

The Springfields Motorbike Show takes place at the Springfields Exhibition Centre, Camelgate, Spalding, Lincolnshire. PE12 6ET on January 15 and 16.

Guy Martin will be appearing on the Sunday with biking star Maria Costello MBE meeting fans the day before.

The classic show continues to grow and will include autojumble for the first time for those elusive classic parts.

Many clubs will be on display including the Lincolnshire arm of the Triumph Club, Royal Enfield Owners Club, and more.

Also returning to the show after last year’s snow storms will be the world famous Ken Fox – Wall of Death (as featured on the BBC1 ident that appears between programmes) performing on both days.

We arrived in Alabama last night at around 8.30pm after one hell of a drive through New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennesse and Georgia - all-in-all about 1,000 miles. I was so tired I could hardly read the menu in the Mexican restaurant we ate at, I stayed awake long enough to meet fellow racer Tim Joyce who is very kindly providing me with a place to stay, in the form of his motorhome - thanks so much Tim!

The Comfort Inn was my home for the night last night – I was awake long enough to text my boyfriend and send one or two emails before I was out-cold and sleeping like a baby.

I originally didn't fancy the road-trip option but when it looked like I was going to be bumped off my flight – I was travelling on a buddy pass – I had either the choice of a three part flight [which was also looking a little shaky] or fly to NYC JFK airport and join Kenny Cummings [the guy who instigated this trip] for an Alabama road-trip. I'm glad I did now as it gave me the chance to get to know my host, see a tiny bit of New York, see some of America as we drove through it and talk about motorbikes for hours.

The topic of conversation was generally centered round motorbikes but Kenny's also a musician [check out the band Shelby on iTunes] so we had some fun listening to each others iPods. Kenny especially liked my Alabama playlist that contained tunes suggested by my followers onTwitter. He particularly liked the Dolly Parton songs [he didn't want me to mention that – not sure why].

The word AWESOME is so fitting right now. This track looks awesome, the museum looks awesome and the weather is awesome. I'm liking Alabama. We've set up in the paddock [we got a great spot] and we'll be heading to Walmart to collect some supplies for the weekend [including some food for the BBQ at the track tonight].

The people in the paddock are so friendly - they are in the same league as the Irish who always make me so welcome.

After some sloppy joes [for dinner] my bike arrived, with it's owner Jamie Waters and we all stood round and ooooo'd at it. Wow she's cute.

I'm loving being here. I'm getting a tiny bit nervous because I need to live up to my hosts expectations but life is good!

Right - I need some sleep.

I'm sat in a van, with my host Kenny Cummings [a couple of Norton race bikes in the back]travelling through West Virginia. We're on a road trip from New York to Alabama where I'll be racing Jamie Waters' Dunstall Norton Lowboy in the AHMRA races at Barber Motorsports this weekend.

I'm not sure if it's the jet-lag or the antibiotics that I'm still taking [thanks to a recent kidney infection] but it all still feels very un-real, like a dream.

Last night [fresh off an eight hour flight]I was stood in Times Square, then given a tour of Spannerland [more about that later] this morning I was eating eggs over-easy with grits [what are grits???] in a Cracker Barrel and now I'm sat in a van writing my blog [thanks to the wonders of technology] as Kenny drives us down south to Alabama in his VW transporter.

And all this from a message on Facebook! Yep, Kenny spotted a picture of me riding a Norton Domiracer at Goodwood last year on my Facebook page Oand messaged me to say he was building a similar bike and how cool it would be if I came over to the States to race it sometime. And look where I am now.

So big thanks to Kenny & Jamie for making this trip possible and to Kenny's sister-in-law for helping me get Business class on my flight over!

I only hope we make it - Kenny's spent more time driving with his knee than he has his hands, or trying to look at what I'm typing. Oh and he's still laughing about me trying to get in the drivers side of the van.

I'll try and post some pictures later when I can hook up to some wifi with my iPhone.

11th DESPITE A FLUFFED START

The Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy Race is a Le Mans start which is one of my favourite parts of the race weekend.

Not today though. I could not get the Gold Star in to first gear. The pack roared off in to the first corner as I persisted to try and locate first but to no avail, finally limping off in second gear.

I made up lots of places but the front pack was well away. (I wasn't expecting to be with them but within sight maybe).

I plugged away and enjoyed my ride on the Fred Walmsley bike but all the time I had an overwhelming feeling that I'd let the team down.

The pit board (Elvis IN) was shown around lap 5. The leaders had already caught me (Brogan followed by McWilliams). I came in to the pits and thankfully a swift change over was made and Keith Bush took up the baton (so to speak). Their was no time for an exchange of words (but I knew he wasn't best pleased with my start).

I apologised to the team as we watched Keith continue the race, finally taking the chequered flag in a fabulous 11th place.

As Keith crossed the line the rear sprocket came loose and he lost all drive - now that was close!

He then had to enjoyed a lap of the track on the back of the recovery truck.

But we'd finished and despite all the errors and problems we were only just out of the top ten.

Tomorrow Keith does the start (his size 11 feet should make that job a little easier) and I get to take the chequered flag.

We want to finish in the single figures tomorrow - so wish us luck!

Right time to watch the Battle of Britain air display.

Thanks to Keith Bush, Fred Walmsley and all the team for their stirling effort today (you guys have been ace).

Plus we get to do it all again tomorrow!!!

Phuttered.....

Yes my BSA Goldstar phuttered (what a great word - invented by my team mate Keith Bush) to a halt in this mornings free practice for the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy race.

I'd only completed three laps when she spluttered and conked out. I was almost at the end of the lap and she thankfully coasted happily in to the pit lane.

The bike's engine had been a little fluffy from the off but as I've not ridden it before I was none the wiser, I just thought that's how it should be. My team mate had encountered some roughness to the engine also (phew, it wasn't just me) but she wasn't supposed to be this rough and eventually conked out.

They mechanics have changed the jetting and she should be good for later on today.

So not many laps under my belt so far and we're straight in to qualifying this afternoon. She's very nice to ride but I'm still getting to grips with the race shift pattern of the gears.

It's all good though - I'm at Goodwood and things don't get much better than the Revival!

I'm sat in the library area of the Drivers Club (I've just had a fantastic lunch) and Ben Fogel has just come and sat next to me. Who would have thought it!

Qualifying is at 5.30pm.

OK so I've only done scrutineering and signing on today but I'm amidst some fantastic people in spectacular surroundings and I get to race a Fred Walmsley BSA Gold Star!

I'm having to pinch myself again.

It's time for some cricket now up at the house.

Maria Costello is celebrating an excellent performance at the Manx Grand Prix despite being denied a place on the podium by a mechanical failure.

The Northampton racer followed up her recent record-busting performance at the Ulster Grand Prix to finish within a whisker of third place in the Manx Grand Prix Senior Post Classic race on the Isle of Man on Monday.

The former Isle of Man TT female lap record holder was riding superbly in third place and was set for another podium finish when the bolt securing the steering damper of her Suzuki XR69 snapped off forcing her to reduce her speed on the final lap.

However, despite the damper failure Costello was thrilled to have ridden so well in a race won by Michael Dunlop in a record time of one hour 18 minutes 6.23 seconds. Costello had entered the last lap behind Dunlop and runner-up Michael Buckley dreaming of her second Isle of Man podium following her 2005 third place in the ultra lightweight category. But the snapped steering damper meant her final lap time of 22mins 46.13 seconds was not enough to prevent Geoff Martin and Chris McGahan overtaking her.

“I’d not even considered a place on the podium, so when I saw the boards around the course with ‘3’ on them it was like, ‘me, third?’,” said Costello, who will be signing copies of her autobiography, Queen Of Bikers, at the Northampton branch of Waterstones later this month.

“Of course it was disappointing to lose out on the podium because of a problem beyond my control, but I’m still over the moon that I managed to get the big old Suzuki back across the finish line without a steering damper.

“The Suzuki has been a real challenge to ride but I’ve had an amazing Manx Grand Prix and I’m looking forward to returning next year on another Post Classic machine.
“I can't thank the 'dream team' of Steve Wheatman [owner of the Suzuki XR69], Jon Sims [who built it], Mick Grant [TT legend and my mentor] and Paul Boulton [top spanner man] enough.

“This Manx Grand Prix has been one of the best experiences of my life.”

Steve Wheatman who owns the bike commented:

"I have been involved for the past three years in classic bike exhibitions and parades but this was a first attempt at being involved with a serious racing event and it was fabulous to have Maria come so close to a podium finish. It was such a brave ride after the steering damper bolt broke. She acheived an average lap time of 105.05 mph and finishing in 5th and bar the mechanical failure would have been on for a certain 3rd place. The icing on the cake was Michael Dunlop's success in winning the race on my other bike and massive thank you to all the team especially Paul Boulton, John Sims of Trident Engineering in Silverstone and team manager and Guru, the legendary Mick Grant."

Costello, awarded the MBE last November for her services to motorcycling, will be signing copies of her autobiography at the Abington Street branch on Waterstones of Friday September 24 between noon and 2pm.

Well what a race. Michael Dunlop took the win with Mark Buckley in second. For a third of the race I was lying third [what a fairy tale result that would have been] but my steering damper snapped off and I ended up 5th.

I'm over the moon!!!

I can't thank the 'dream team' of Steve Wheatman [owner of the Suzuki XR69], Jon Sims [who built it], Mick Grant [TT legend and my mentor] and Paul Boulton [top spanner man] enough. This Manx Grand Prix has been one of the best experiences of my life.

DUNLOP SHATTERS LAP AND RACE RECORD IN POST CLASSIC SENIOR RACE AT THE MANX GRAND PRIX
Chris Palmer takes the Honours in the Post Classic Junior with new record as well

Post Classic records tumbled on the opening day of the 2010 Manx Grand Prix sponsored by visitisleofman.com, with both Michael Dunlop in the Senior Post Classic and Chris Palmer in the Junior Post Classic races posting lap and race records. Perfect conditions all around the course were reported as a packed grandstand settled down for the first day’s racing on the Isle of Man.

Clerk of the Course Phil Taubman revised the start order following the speeds posted by the Post Classic Senior machines with the Post Classics Senior class following the Newcomers A away with Newcomers B slotting behind and Post Classic Junior at the end of the pack.

First away in the Post Classics were Olie Linsdell on the Yamaha FZ 746 and Mark Buckley riding the Suzuki XR69. However, it was Michael Dunlop, who set a series of blistering times in qualifying riding 1981 Suzuki XR69 997cc who established an early lead to Glen Helen with a time of 118.485 from Olie Linsdell and Mark Buckley.

Dunlop extended his lead at Ballaugh (124.607) from Linsdell to 4 seconds with Buckley a further 10 seconds back on Linsdell. Linsdell was the quickest through the Sulby Speed trap on the first lap with 164.1 to Dunlop’s 149.1.

Linsdell was first through the Grandstand with 117.271 on the opening lap with a new lap record, but Michael Dunlop improved it to 117.979 shortly after and led by 6.75 seconds with Scotsman Mark Buckley third with 114.575. Dunlop extended his lead to just over 9 seconds from Linsdell by Glen Helen with Mark Buckley a further 46 seconds behind Linsdell, making up the Top 3.

However, Olie Linsdell came off at Bishop’s Court in what was described by race organisers as a serious incident and was taken by Air Med to Nobles Hospital. No further details were available.

On the second lap Dunlop recorded 118.186 to extend his lead to 1 minute 24 seconds over the second placed rider Mark Buckley with Maria Costello moving up into third. Dunlop had a lead of over a minute and a half through Glen Helen from Mark Buckley and completed his third lap in 110.586, a time that included the pit stop at the end of the second lap. At the end of the third lap his lead was almost 2 minutes from Mark Buckley with Maria Costello holding third place.

Michael Dunlop completed the expected victory with a final lap of 117.355 for an overall race record of 1:18.06.23 with Buckley second (1:20.36.81).

However, a costly final lap for Maria Costello of 22:46.13 (99.425) depriving her of her second MGP podium, which would have been only the third occasion a woman has finished in the top three following Costello’s 2005 third place in the Ultra Lightweight and Carolynn Sells victory in last year’s 400cc Ultra Lightweight race. Geoff Martin eventually took the final podium spot from Chris McGahan on the Miles Trident with Maria in fifth place.

After the race Michael Dunlop said: “ I could have gone faster but I held back to make sure that a few more boys could claim their replicas. I’m just so pleased for all the team who have worked so hard on the bike. I felt the bike could have done 121 or 122mph as the bike was faultless – all the team put a lot of hard work in..”

In the Post Classic Junior race Chris Palmer, on the 1962 AJS 7R 350cc, dominated the race and led from start to finish. He posted an opening lap record of 111.729, giving him a 38 second lead from Brian Mateer (108.268mph) on a Yamaha TZB 249 with Stuart Garton in third place with Barry Davidson fourth and Ewan Hamilton in fifth. The top five in the Junior Post Classic race all broke the lap record on the opening lap.

Palmer extended his lead on the second lap with 109.996 from Mateer with Barry Davidson in third after Garton dropped out before Glen Helen on the second lap. Palmer’s third lap (105.143) gave him a lead of almost 2 minutes from Mateer with Davidson holding third and Palmer eventually came home with an impressive final lap of 109.312 for a win by over 3 minutes from Phil McGurk with Barry Davidson taking the final podium slot.

Chris Palmer “Traffic wasn’t as bad as I expected but there was definitely a bit of congestion in places. I didn’t want to do anything silly on the last lap so I just rolled it off and came home. The conditions were great on the track and as I’ve been on the Isle of Man for 10 years I now consider myself Manx so it was nice to hear the anthem.”

Woman-up!

Yep, I've managed to woman-up and feel like I can actually ride the XR69 now.

We made a lot of changes to the riding position and to the throttle for Thursday night’s practice session. Finally it felt like a position from which I could ride it rather than the bike being in control with me stretched across the tank Superman style.

Paul & Mick also devised a great throttle which means I can hold her open now in top gear. This improved all my speed trap times by over 30% and finally I managed to break the ton!

So practice really only began for us on Thursday night meaning we only had Friday night’s and tonight’s sessions left.

Friday night was, well, Mick went the wrong way with the suspension – he said so him self that he’d made a mistake. But the two laps weren’t a waste of time and I did manage a 102.2mph from a standing start [a slight improvement].

I’ve not long got back from doing a lap in a car with Mick Grant and Steve Wheatman [my sponsor and the guy who owns the XR’s that both Michael Dunlop and I a re riding and all the bikes on display in the marquee in the MGP paddock]. It’s raining and most of the track is wet which is a dam shame because the gauntlet has been thrown down by my mechanic Paul Boulton who has said that if I crack 110mph he will wear a dress!

Anyway time to head back up to the paddock – catch you later!

Am I man enough?

Practice didn't go well last night. I really thought we'd made a break through during testing at Jurby earlier in the day but it didn't turn out that way.

The XR is a motorbike but it's a big old lump and the riding position, throttle and brakes are a world apart form anything else I've ridden around the TT course and I'm starting to realise the challenge I face to get a decent lap time on it.

My shoulder, that I've broken twice, isn't enjoying the experience and I have to admit to being disappointed with my lap times last night.

BUT I am still enjoying the whole experience. I don't know whether it’s due to the recent events that have happened in my life but the MGP and maybe racing in general has been put in to perspective for me and whilst remaining passionate I can also see the bigger picture.

Michael Dunlop is a card. What a great lad [and some rider too – but you knew that already]. He’s had us in stitches from the moment he arrived. He has a one liner for everything and comes out with some corking quotes [unfortunately I couldn’t repeat them on here]. He admitted last night that he’d forgotten to tell his Mum that he was even taking part in the MGP. So when he topped the practice time sheets he thought he better give her a call and let her know.

Am I man enough for the XR69? I don’t know? I love riding it - thank you Steve Wheatman. And what I do know is that I’ll be giving it my all!

Tuesday [24/08/2010] was a really productive day right up until the evening practice session. I'd had an early morning run, done some work on my lap top and done a load of washing.

With the XR69 prepared and ready to go, we didn't really have much to do in the run up to the session starting. This is always a strange time in the day when you feel in limbo.

Being the first group out we ‘the dream team’ thought we'd have an early finish tonight but that wasn't to be. I got one lap in but pitted to make some changes. We had about eight minutes to lower/drop the forks through. The bike fired up and went up the ramp [on to the road] but we were stopped by the officials. We'd missed the cut off time for getting back out by about half a minute. That did put a dampener on the evening but that’s just the way it goes sometimes.

Wednesday 25th August 2010.

We’ve been testing at Jurby this morning. Wow these bikes really do need more input than your average R6. I’m learning so much from Paul and Mick. I do feel totally honoured to be working with them both. We seem to have made some real inroads in to suspension and the engine so I’m really hopeful that the XR69 is going to feel a million times better for tonight’s practice session. Lets hope the weather holds, it’s dry at the moment but anything can happen between now and 7.05pm.

Have you been up to the MGP paddock? It’s a must – not just to see us racers but to see the amazing Steve Wheatman Suzuki collection on show in a marquee behind the Grandstand.

Monday 23rd August 2010.

I woke to a wet morning on the Isle of Man. Mick Grant collected me from my digs [thank you to Hilary for sorting me out with a great place to stay] and we headed off for a wet lap of the TT course. [I won't tell you that we stopped off at Ramsey for tea and a toasted tea cake because he’s not supposed to be eating that kind of thing.]

The fog was down and the roads were wet through. But the weather can change dramatically here and with over nine hours before I was due to practice I was hopeful it would dry up.

Back at the paddock time is spent doing little jobs like framing some pictures I’ve brought over as thank you presents for people who supported me at this years TT. It’s a strange time and I feel in limbo. Paul Boulton has had the XR in bits again – this man loves what he does and his attention to detail is second to none, I feel privileged having him as my mechanic for the Manx. He and Mick are working well together and I can’t help but pinch myself when I see them preparing a bike for me to ride – what a dream team.

I end up in MacDonald’s to get online to chat to my boyfriend on MSN. He’s somewhere very dry and hot but he’d rather be here getting wet in the MGP paddock. By the time I leave the yellow arches the sun is out and the roads in Douglas are dry. I’m even more optimistic of some dry laps.

Then news of rain in Ramsey starts spreading around the paddock and rain arrives soon after.

I sit with my ‘dream team’ in the Hailwood centre and catch up with friends Sarah and Richard [who’s reading about David Knight’s latest British Championship win]. Finally I get in to my Bering leathers when I hear the newcomers ride off on their marshalled lap. The wet weather has only caused a short delay.

I come in from my first lap. The bike needs more suspension changes. Mick & Paul take the bike back to the awning and frantically make some adjustments. I spot Mark Buckley and ask him how his lap was, he comments on how wet the mountain was and I am left puzzled as I thought it was dry. The bikes wheeled back round to me and I’m back out on the road just minutes spare before the session ends. The mountain is drying out and NOW I can see that what I’d thought was dry was actually wet – I guess I need to go to spec savers! And yes I did have a clear visor on.

As I come down from Kate’s Cottage to the Creg I notice the moon is out. Practicing by moonlight at the Manx – how romantic!

The changes revealed we have a few issues with the front forks. Paul, Mick and I have a short de-brief in the front of the van [yes I know that sounds totally wrong – you filthy minded people] and they’re sure the problem can be resolved.

Team debrief done – so we head to Paparazzi for supper.

Saturday 21st August 2010.

The first un-timed practice session for the 2010 MGP got underway, after a short weather delay, in bright sunshine at Douglas. The newcomers session was out first and they were met with wet roads on the mountain. By the time I got out on the XR69 the roads had dried except for a few damp patches here and there. The fog however had come down from Bungalow to the 33rd and it was as thick as pea soup.

I came in to the pits at the end of my first lap [as per team orders] and I was surprised that the organisers were still allowing people to continue out for more laps – with the thick fog up the top.

We’d done enough to ascertain all the info we needed to move forward with the XR’s set-up so I didn’t do another lap.

So what’s the XR like. Well I’ve not wound her up yet [team orders] so can’t tell you much more than she’s great ;)
As we’ve had little to no time with the bike we used the un-timed session to obtain lots of info [a 40 mile lap can reveal lots of things].

Monday 23rd August 2010.

The weather plays such an important role in the running of the MGP. If the fog or low cloud prevents the medic helicopters from landing then practice or races can not be run.

I went for a lap with Granty earlier and it was wet and foggy but now the sun is shining – so here’s to some more laps tonight. Will give you another up-date soon!

Once in a lifetime experience....

The Manx Grand Prix has been a huge part of my racing career ever since I first raced here back in 1996. This year however it holds a new status for me. It’s more than just a road race around the amazing TT course it’s going to be an experience of a lifetime.

You’re probably wondering how it can be, when I’ve been coming here for all those years? Well this is how I see it….

I will be competing on a Suzuki XR69 that has been provided by Steve Wheatman. It’s similar to the one Guy Martin rode last year, only this one is more standard and will be a work in progress as practice week unfolds. Having the opportunity to ride this bike makes me feel so humble and really brings home the fact that I’m very, very fortunate.

Then there’s my mechanic for the event [my main man is away in Afghanistan], Paul Boulton, he’s a legend in his own right having worked with the likes of Kevin Schwantz, Paul Smart, Paul Iddon back in the good old days of Grand Prix’s and Formula 1. He’s from the old school of engineering where they built parts from scratch rather than just bolted on ready-made components [not that the latter doesn’t require skill, but back then these guys were the truck driver, engine builder, tyre and wheel guy and mechanic all rolled in to one – catch my drift?]. We’ve worked together before too which helps and his dry sense of humour and story telling is

One of the final elements to my once in a lifetime experience is my mentor. You may have heard of him? He’s the one and only, seven times TT winner, Mick Grant. Having him here as my mentor is just unreal. We’ve just done a lap of the TT course and the stuff he has passed on to me [I hope I can remember and more importantly put in to practice what he’s told me] is just worth it’s weight in gold [I so wish I’d had him here at the TT].

So I think this is going to be one amazing, once in a lifetime experience! Don’t you?

I’m one lucky girl and I don’t ever take that for granted. In fact I just had to pinch myself – yep this is really happening in my life!

Practice for this years Manx Grand Prix gets underway tonight. Roads Close at 5pm.

It's Manx Grand Prix time!

The Manx Grand Prix has really crept up on me this year, where has the year gone?

I'm racing a Suzuki XR69 built by John Simms and owned by Steve Wheatman. I've got Paul Boulton as my spanner man and Mick Grant as my mentor.

The vans packed [to the roof] and we're due on the Liverpool sailing tomorrow morning.

If the weathers kind it should be good fun and with seven times TT winner Mick Grant as my mentor I should come back with an increased knowledge of the circuit - well that's the plan anyway.

I'll also be up-dating my blog daily - so watch this space.

Time now for sleep.

Maria Costello becomes fastest woman at Ulster Grand Prix

Maria Costello MBE put in a sterling performance to become the fastest woman to lap the fastest road race in the world, the Ulster Grand Prix.

The Northampton racer took the female lap record in the Around A Pound Supersport race at the McKinstry Ulster Grand Prix at the weekend when she lapped at an average speed of 114.328mph on her CMS Yamaha R6.

The former Isle of Man TT female lap record holder beat Anita Buxton’s previous record by almost two seconds when she took part in the Dundrod 150 & McKinstry Ulster Grand Prix for the first time on a Supersport 600 machine.

Costello’s decision to cross the Irish Sea was a last-minute one, and she was thrilled to claim a lap record that had stood since 2004.

“I’d not raced since the TT and it was a last-minute decision to go to the Ulster which was prompted by an email from clerk of the course Noel Johnston inviting me to attend,” said Costello, who will be signing copies of her autobiography, Queen Of Bikers, at the Northampton branch of Waterstones next month.

“I had a few laps at a Focused Events track-day at Oulton Park the afternoon before we caught the ferry. Mick Grant, the seven-times TT winner who is mentoring me at this year’s Manx Grand Prix helped me set up both my RVF and R6, which gave me added confidence at the UGP.

“The course is so fast. I really enjoyed it and I didn’t stop smiling all weekend. The weather really helped but hats off to the organisers for putting on a top event!”

Costello, awarded the MBE last November for her services to motorcycling, will be signing copies of her autobiography ‘Queen of Bikers’ at the Abington Street branch of Waterstones in Northampton on September 24 between noon and 2pm.

“I’m always grateful for the fantastic support I receive and would love to meet and chat to the people who have supported me throughout my career who can come along,” she added.

Maria Costello, MBE, is the most prominent female rider in British motorbike racing – a traditionally male-dominated sport. It's been needing a spring clean for some time now and although the design has been happening behind the scenes [so to speak] for some time now, it took the pending book release to further motivate me to get it completed and online.

COSTELLO ENJOYS COOKSTOWN 100 DEBUT

Maria made her debut at the Cookstown 100 this weekend, the opening round of the Irish Road Race season, on the CMS Honda RVF400. Costello will be competing at a selection of Irish Road Races throughout the season alongside her team mate Davy Morgan as part of the 2010 CSC Team.

Maria arrived at the Orritor Circuit, County Tyrone on Thursday evening with just enough daylight to complete some laps on a scooter and a couple in a car with a fellow racer.

Friday: Once the lap on the newcomers bus was completed practice commenced on Friday afternoon in dry and sunny conditions. Her first five laps were done in controlled conditions in the ‘newcomers un-timed’ session. A further two timed sessions followed and Maria found another two seconds faster in the later session. However Maria’s overall performance had been hindered by the bike over heating and losing power at the end of each session. Despite this problem she had still achieved her goal of qualifying in the ‘A Race’ which she realised with a lap time of 1 min 41.5 seconds.

With the over heating issues it was essential for the engine to be replaced with the spare, recently re-freshed by tuner Tony Holmes, once practice had concluded. Costello’s sponsor and mechanics worked late in to the evening to ensure she would have a machine on which she could secure a finish on the following day.

Saturday: Racers and fans alike were pleased to be greeted by yet another dry and sunny day, albeit slightly cooler, for race day of the season opener. With the new engine installed Costello was allowed one lap during the warm up for the 125 race to ensure all was as it should be for her one and only race of the day in the combined 250GP / 400SS Race.

As she lined up on the grid her CSC Team mechanic Maurice Hogg gave the bike a final check over and Maria some final words of advice before the flag dropped and Maria was away with the pack down the fast top gear straight and in to the heavy breaking zone of the first corner.

Still learning the course with each lap Maria’s confidence was boosted by the fact that she could easily maintain the same pace as her rivals and during the race she improved her laps times by over 4.5 seconds. It was only when a couple of slower riders were encountered that her lack of knowledge of the course meant that she lost touch with the two front runners. Once past them she set about catching and passing the 400 in front. She did so on the final lap, out-braking him at the McAdoo Bends which was a feat in itself as the brakes were fading fast due to the deteriorating front brake master cylinder. Maria crossed the finish line in 3rd place in the 400 class, lapping the course in a commendable 1 min 37.9 seconds.

Imperial College London is pleased to announce their 2010 electric motorbike and rider. The ‘Electric Hayabusa’, which was designed and built by a team of 16 undergraduate students led by final-year student Ben Smith, will be ridden by Maria Costello MBE in the 2010 TT Zero.

Ben Smith said: "We're really excited about this years race and letting our bike loose on the TT circuit. Our team are confident in the Hayabusa based design and look forward to putting it through it's paces on the Isle of Man. Having a high calibre rider like Maria on-board will allow us to test the limits of what the machine can do"

Chassis & Body

Featuring unique swingarm mounted motors, the Suzuki GSXR1300 Hayabusa based design retains the suspension and main chassis of the legendary bike while adding a bespoke Aluminium Alloy Battery cage and motor mounting. All new bodywork completes the bike and improves on the Hayabusa’s already impressive aerodynamic properties.

Motor & Control

Propelling the bike are twin Lemco D135 Rag DC Brushed motors, each outputting 16kW (34kW peak) giving a combined 68kW/91bhp and 160Nm (peak) at the back wheel. These are controlled by a single Kelly KDH12800B unit allowing custom throttle ramps and thermal monitoring.

Batteries

Delivering power to the motors are 90 Thundersky LFP40AHA LiFeYPO4 cells offering a combined 96V and 360A continuously; these packs are monitored by 3 REAP BMS14C Battery Management Systems (BMS’) which constantly monitor and adjust individual pack voltage.

19/03/2010:

The TT 2010 Launch invite arrived in my inbox and I just couldnt pass
up the chance to get a Manx fix so headed over to the Isle of Man for the weekend.

Richie Freeman met me off the boat and he also collected a mini bus full of Manx Grand Prix newcomers also over for the weekend.

Nigel 'Speedy' John was already at MGP Newcomer HQ - the Sulby Glen - so we joined them there for some hearty Manx grub before returning to Douglas for the TT launch.

The Villa Marina was was wall-to-wall TT - Racers, bikes,officials, marshalls and fans. The atmosphere was electric - yep the TT Zero race was given a big plug.

I was kind of bummed when Rico Penzkofer used an interpreter during his interview on stage. But my plan to pick his brains about the BMW S1000RR was saved by journalist John Watterson who revealed that Rico's English is actually very good and he introduced me.

Rico was really cool to chat to about the Beemer and he offered to help where he could. He's one very fast rider and TT racer with Beemer knowledge - thanks for the intro JW!

So interviews and announcements over it was time to gather up the MGP newbies and head home, well my home from home, my digs at Mount Murray, Chez Holdaway.

Oh and thanks for the little gift Speedy!

Imagine if you could pop round and see Rossi for a cuppa, well Richie, Roger (Ra Ra's brother) and I did the Manx equivalent and called in to Juan Knight's Garage to see him and his brother David - twice World Enduro Champion. I'd love to ride with such a legend but I managed to escape being taken off-roading that day (I don't think my BMW fleece went down very well either) but I don't think my excuses will work next time.

We continued on our lap of the TT course and checked out some of the new tarmac that's been laid and also some of the pot holes left after the harsh winter. These will all be taken care of before the TT.

Catching a game of footie up near the Grandstand wouldn't normally be high on my agenda but it was cool watching friend Ryan Holdaway score a winning goal. I then caught up with the MGP newbies for a meeting at the Grandstand, this was something new for me but I hope to get more involved in taking newcomers to my favourite road race track in future.

Then it was Sunday, the weekend had flown by, I went for an early morning lap with TT newcomer Stephen Thompson (he's some good knowledge - obviously been doing his homework) and got back just as my mate Hil's was serving up a cooked breakfast.

Then I was back on the ferry and heading home.

I hope to be back for more before the TT gets underway at the end of May.....fingers crossed.
